Krystof S. Bankiewicz, MD, PhD
Dr. Bankiewicz earned an MD degree from the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Ph.D., D.Sc. degrees from the Institute of Neurology and Psychiatry in Warsaw, Poland, and the title of Professor from the President of Republic of Poland. He is a member of Polish Academy of Science. Dr. Bankiewicz received a Fogarty Fellowship and trained under Dr. Irvin Kopin and Dr. Edward Oldfield at the Surgical Neurology Branch of the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) at National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he had a tenure as a Staff Scientist. Dr. Bankiewicz has become a recognized expert in neuro-restorative medicine, including for the local delivery of therapeutics within the brain and gene therapy, translating multiple therapeutic agents and gene therapies to the clinic, and bringing these successful experiences to BrainNeuBio. His previous positions have included being Vice Chair for Research and Chief of the Molecular Therapeutics Section at NIH, and a 20-year tenure as Kinetics Foundation Chair in Translational Research and Professor in Residence of Neurological Surgery and Neurology at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Bankiewicz has both industry and academic experience, is an inventor on numerous patents and has published more than 200 peer-reviewed research articles. Currently, Dr. Bankiewicz holds an academic position at The Ohio State University, as a Professor of Neurosurgery. Throughout his career, Dr. Bankiewicz has maintained a strong focus on the development of translational approaches to drug, gene and cell replacement therapies, and has displayed the ability to develop distinct technologies into powerful new approaches for the treatment of serious human diseases, including brain cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s diseases, pediatric neurotransmitter deficiency, and lysosomal storage disorders. Dr. Bankiewicz co-founded MedGenesis Therapeutix, Inc. and Voyager Therapeutics, Inc., and has served on various Scientific Advisory Boards. Dr. Bankiewicz has pioneered two ongoing gene therapy clinical trials for Parkinson’s disease and one directed toward a pediatric neurotransmitter deficiency. He has also invented several medical devices currently used in the clinic to administer gene therapy to the brain.
